What would need to be true for this role to be able to lose me?
01 / RECOGNIZE
You ask about moving into a new role. Your manager says, “You’re too valuable where you are.” Pause before offering to work harder.
02 / RESPOND
Useful specifics might include a replacement, a handover, an open role, or a skill you need to demonstrate. For example: “We need someone else trained on the monthly close.” That gives you a condition to discuss.
03 / FOLLOW THROUGH
If they name a condition, ask: “Who needs to agree that it’s met, and when can we review it?” If they need time, ask for a date to revisit. An unclear answer means the path is still unclear; it does not prove what your manager intends.
